Space is a very large topic! First there is space in nearly every room that is needed for your dog. There is space outside in your yard that is needed for your dog. There is even space needed in your car. And most importantly there needs to be space in your heart and in your life for your dog!
Let's look at the space requirements inside your house first. In the kitchen, there needs to be space for a water bowl and place for him to eat. If you eat in the kitchen, you will need a place for your dog to be while you eat. This may be in the kitchen or not. In the den or family room where the family gathers to watch TV, there needs to be a spot for your dog. Don't expect him to always be happy lying on the floor; give him a specific place for your dog; otherwise he will use your places. He needs a place to sleep as well. I find this best to be in a bedroom. You will also need to define a space for him to stay in while you go away unless he has earned free run of the house!
Outside! The best of all worlds is to have a fenced in area or the whole yard for him to run around and play in at will. This is not always possible. So areas that you will need to define are: bathroom areas, off limit areas, and his outside shelter. The bathroom area should be defined and used from day one. This will be a major time savings in keeping your yard clean. Off limit areas may need to be fenced off so the dog can not enter these areas. Don't forget to create a house or some form of shelter if your dog is going to be kept outside for any length of time.
Car! There will be times that your dog will need to be transported in the car. You will need to decide how you will securely and safely transport your dog. Possibly you will use a seatbelt or crate, he will need an assigned area in the car.
Now for the most important space needed, in your heart and life. This should be the easiest one to accomplish. Only you know how to make room there for your furry friend.
